mySQL used to be $500 for a commercial license for unlimited number of
users and unlimited number of CPU. Support was $1100 a year.

Checking the mySQL web site store: https://shop.mysql.com/ it appears
the price is $1795 per server per year but volumne discounts are
available. Other options are available off the web site
http://www.mysql.com/buy-mysql/ for getting the product through partners
like DELL.

Try Firebird (if you can).

http://www.firebirdsql.org/

No fees, no cost, commercial or otherwise, low impact, can be embedded
and handles TB databases too. Theres a utility named Fyracle which
allows you to use PL/SQL code in Firebird - this is a commercial tool
though.

I believe that MYSQL costs $500 US per seat (?) if used commercially -
but don't quote me on that, I haven't checked, only hearsay.
Not sure about Postgress.

Cheers,
Norman.

We are considering OpenSource for less critical databases to reduce
Licence and Maintenance costs.

MySQL apparently does have Annual Fees (or Support).
Does Postgres have Annual Fees ?

Technically for
a) databases of upto 10GB
b) concurrent user counts of upto 25
c) single instance databases without replication
d) Apache/JBoss kind of application servers
e) 24x7 with requirements for Hot Backups
f) implementaion on Linux

what seems better ? MySQL or Postgress.
