I would be quick to say approximately 95% of DBA's are faced with some private
data issue at some level in their work environment.  I've worked with both
Canadian and US health industry clients and both have shown intense levels of
protection to their personal data regarding patients, etc.  I've also seen
marketing companies place strict requirements on what could be shared between
systems, (i.e. IP addresses from customer's web transactions can't be matched
with personal data from catalog systems that can't be shared with customer
profiling marts.)
Protecting personal data with added security is just one more role in our many
hats we wear... :)

I don’t know where the Canadians stand on privacy laws; the US is pretty
strict but I am finding that in the UK – excepting voice mail on cell phones
J- is even stronger on PIA / PPI / PCI (aka private info) than the US.

...but we would be more than happy to tell you all the bad things that could
happen if you did choose to backup data, especially PPI to an external disk...

I get that. This is a brilliant Oracle list, frequented by lots of high profile
Oracle people. Not the sorts that would be doing that kind of thing. :)
