I'll see your three nodes and raise you one (yes, I have no idea about poker
terminology).

I can run a 4-node RAC (because three node is stll a special case when you're
examining instance failure) on 16GB. I've also run up a 5th VM at the same time
to run OEM under Firefox, but I don't use the full setup often and starting it
all up is slow.

My next machine will be a 32GB machine - mainly because Cloud Control seems to
want a lot of memory.
Troubles with "large" memories - how much time does it take to
hibernate/shutdown etc.

I have a machine with 16gb ram, My RAC vms use 2g ram (but I have 3 of them
since 2 node is a special case :) ) As Justin points out EM12c really wants a
significant chunk of memory so I rarely run all 4 vms at the same time. If I
had a 32gb machine I probably would.

I opted for an m6700 with 32GB of memory. That way I could run 12c RAC, 12c
Cloud Control, a few stand-alone instances, and all my standard apps at the
same time. The virtualized 2-node RAC and the Cloud Control VM use 14GB just on
their own (4GB per node, 6GB for Cloud Control).

The laptop itself is bigger and more expensive, but that doesn't bother me much
as I don't move it around very much. I just checked the Dell website and the
m4800, which has a smaller form factor, supports up to 32GB of RAM.

Listers,

Looking at buying a new laptop, and intend to use Oracle's VM and Linux to
mimic various production scenarios, playing with things
like RAC, Data Guard, Golden Gate, OEM 12c, etc. There was a discussion last
January where some wished felt fine with 16gb memory,
though some wondered if that would be enough. So, I want to revisit and see if
those limited to 16gb found they could meet their
needs?

I know a lot depends on exactly what I intend to do, and what all is running at
the same time. So just more a generic question if
those limited to 16gb found they could do all they needed to do. There are many
more options for laptops supporting up to 16gb
versus those that will support up to 32gb (which also tend to be bigger,
heavier, and more expensive).
