Thanks I also asked the SQL*Server lead here and the answer in Excel is (as it often is apparently) "Use a Pivot Table" Specifically generate a pivot table and use Date as row labels, Tablespace as column labels and "sum of" size as the values. Choose a stacked area chart to plot. It occurs to me that APEX might well work as well.
