$ORACLE_HOME without subdirs/version number and what does root.sh exactly

Hi folks

I installed my first oracle client. Why my oracle home is something like

$ echo $ORACLE_HOME
/opt/app/oracle

and not for example /opt/app/oracle/product/10.2.1 (with subdirs and
version number). Did I do something wrong during installation?

I didn't run the script /opt/app/oracle/root.sh, but sqlplus
connection is working fine. What does the root.sh do exactly? What are
consequences if not run?

cheers
Sven
