This year for some reasons you cannot create alternatives at all - only
keynotes can overlap with something else.
At least that's what I've been told by the Support team a week ago (via "Chat
Now" option in the scheduler). Of course, I immediately asked them to log a
Service Request :-).
I bet, if more people would do the same in the next couple of days, they could
quickly add this functionality. Being able to have more than one option is
always a good idea!

That is right. To guarantee a seat and get in before the waiting line goes down
you need to book a session in session builder. While you cannot rank
alternatives, you can (or at least the past few years you could and I have not
done this year's yet) mark sessions of interest without booking a seat.

I'm pretty sure that the Oracle schedule builder app allocates space in the
room when you sign up for a session. That is why Oracle employees like me
aren't allowed to use it to build our schedules for the week - we aren't
allowed to take space away from attendees ;-)
