First – Thanks for Mark for confirming this is ok to post this … ☺ I’ve got two
different Topics:
Topic One: When you are looking for a DBA job (past or present) where did you
go to find solid job leads? Did you use a web site, did you call specific
recruiters that worked well for you? If you found yourself looking today, where
would you go? I know that networking is a powerful resource, but I’d like to
get some ideas for cases where someone simply does not have sufficient network
bandwidth to find a job that way. Bottom line is that I’d like to look at these
resources in an effort to bring on another DBA or two here. Which leads to…
Topic Two:
I’ve got way more work to do that one Sr. DBA and one Jr. DBA can handle here.
As a result, we are in the beginning stages of looking for another DBA here at
Businessolver. Right now, we don’t have an “official” job posted. However,
Management is on-board with the notion that they need at least one more DBA
resource, and fast…
First – I work for a company called Businessolver. What is my company like?
Here is the web page for the company: http://businessolver.com It’s a growing ;
company that’s fast paced and there is a LOT to do from the DBA side. I need
someone to provide some lift so I can move away from production DBA duties and
dedicate time to architecture and planning.
Here is what we would be looking for:
1. Full time – on-site in Des Moines, IA.– yes, you will need to move to
Des Moines. I know, I know – some of you might say – Des Moines?? Really?? I
said that when I first was contacted by Businessolver – but it’s really a great
city to live in. In fact, in my life I’ve made more than one job move to a city
where I said to myself “Really – xyz?” and was quite happy with the choice. I
can put you in touch with our HR team that can tell you all about Des Moines.
2. A well rounded, experienced - senior DBA – I started to put a number
(ie: 10 years) to the experience requirement but thought better about it. By
the time I had five years of experience I’d seem so many different types of
database environments, and had done so many things, that I’d have hired myself
for this position!)
So, the mandatory experience and skill sets I’d be looking for are:
a. Capable of being a full charge production Oracle DBA.
b. Oracle 11gR2 RDBMS running RAC
c. Operational experience (I’m not looking for an operator but for someone
to help me further mature our production environment).
d. SQL Tuning (including finding those pesky buggers pro-actively)
e. RMAN/Data Pump – be able to backup, recover a database
f. PL/SQL – dynamic SQL, functions, procedures, etc.
g. Linux experience – I don’t need you to be a Linux admin. I do need you
to be able to understand, read and write shell scripts to perform things like
scheduled database tasks. We use ksh here for the most part. I intend on
continuing down that path.
h. You need to be a Self-starter while at the same time being able to stay
on task.
i. Basic communication skills are mandatory.
j. Being comfortable with getting your head out of the cube and into the
world of developers, etc is mandatory.
k. I don’t need you to know all the answers. I need you to know how to GET
all the answers – quickly and efficiently.
l. Patient… ☺
3. Nice to have experience
a. Shareplex (any replication experience is helpful)
b. OEM
c. 12c Experience including upgrades (big 12c upgrade project next year)
d. Data modeling
e. Oracle auditing and security
f. Programming (Java/C)
g. Experience with Agile development environments
h. Good social skills
Anyway… drop me a line if you are interested or if you know someone who would
be interested…
Thanks!
