I'm fairly certain I replied already as to why I was looking for other
options, but I'll recap here:
Past experience (probably outdated now) with tape drive throughput was (is)
a concern for me but my storage and backup guys assure me that we should be
able to backup the database to tape with very little heartburn. So that's
going to be our first approach. We're going to start with weekly fulls and
nightly incrementals to see where we are. Once we determine if the timing
is serviceable, we'll either try a different strategy or go with straight
to tape.

from my POV, I thought this topic had been addressed and put to bed.

Mladen there is more than one solution, including ones that are tape only
without any disks, but the original database disks. There are a variety of
technological solutions with what Chris has and what he doesn’t have, but
more information is needed from Chris.
In most cases unless you are using very expensive Tier 1 SAN storage, tape
can actually outrun disk and you can use multiple channels with tape also
without lag. It really goes back to the Infrastructure architecture.

Well, there aren't many options. You must do database backup to disk, so
that you can use multiple channels and benefit from the disk speed, while
copying to tape in the background, possibly with a considerable lag. The
details are a matter of choice. Any backup software can do that. Not much
to think about, really.
