Hmm...ok, I stand corrected.  Thanks Kurt, I wasn't aware of that.

I just assumed they'd get dropped like a dependent object.

No.
They won't go away - they'll persist in the data dictionary and will take effect
later if a tablespace with the same name is created again.
And it cannot be removed as long as no tablespace with this name exists.
