Re: Is ADG required for backing up from a standby

One subtlety:  If you plan to perform incremental backups on the DataGuard standby database, and if you plan to use a block-change tracking (BCT) file on the standby to optimize those incremental backups, then using a BCT file on a DataGuard standby requires an *Active *DataGuard license.  Search for the text "block change tracking" HERE <https://www.oracle.com/database/technologies/faq-active-data-guard.html>.

Of course, some may say, "/standby is not production so BCT is not needed/", but incremental backups without BCT on very large databases can overrun timeslots, so that decision should be made on a case-by-case basis.

ADG is not required, however you must use an rman catalog in order to do it.

    Oracle 12c on RHEL5

I have been asked if we can create a standby and do backups from
there instead of through Commvault while they do some storage
conversions.  I have read conflicting information as to whether or
not Active Data Guard is required to run backups from the
standby.  I can't open a ticket with Oracle to ask the question
since management saw fit to cancel our support.  If someone could
point me in the right direction, that would be great.  Also, we do
not use a catalog for our backups.
