Thank you for your informative comments Mladen.

In that case your "don't use undocumented hints in production" principle 
doesn't hold water.

As I spread myself out over a wide number of development technologies, I take 
on the advice of those that specialise and are respected in the field.  I find 
his book very well written and authoritative so at the time took a mental note 
regarding the OPT_ESTIMATE hint.
