Hey Paul,
I realise the format of these dump files is largely undocumented. Is there
anywhere I can go to read up on them?
This is why it is called dump ;-)
AFAIK there is not one single source that explains every parameter and flag
(content), but books like "Oracle Core: Essential Internals for DBAs and
Developers", several internals presentations from Oracle guys, Tanel, etc. or
just the bug section from My Oracle support explains a lot - when not
all ....

That is what I was after.
And yes, this is largely academic interest, but piqued looking at another
problem, which was rather dull!
