The "-R" option does not exist in many versions of grep such as that which is provided with AIX 5.2 Jared, your version of the command is indeed an order of magnitude faster than using the -exec option of find With the often minor but sometimes annoying differences in the standard UNIX utilities on different platforms it is good to know multiple command patterns to accomplish the same task. In a multiple platform shop you never know when you might have to tweak a script to get the same results. -- Mark D Powell -- -----Original Message----- From: oracle-l-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:oracle-l-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx]On Behalf Of Jared.Still@xxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Thursday, August 12, 2004 5:51 PM To: oracle-l@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: Re: Grep entire file system oracle-l-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx wrote on 08/12/2004 02:38:51 PM: > > find . -type f -print | xargs grep sqlplus > > just plain grep will do, use the '-R' flag > > $ grep -R sqlplus / > kudos! even better than xargs jared ---------------------------------------------------------------- Please see the official ORACLE-L FAQ: http://www.orafaq.com ---------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe send email to: oracle-l-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx put 'unsubscribe' in the subject line. -- Archives are at //www.freelists.org/archives/oracle-l/ FAQ is at //www.freelists.org/help/fom-serve/cache/1.html ----------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------- Please see the official ORACLE-L FAQ: http://www.orafaq.com ---------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe send email to: oracle-l-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx put 'unsubscribe' in the subject line. -- Archives are at //www.freelists.org/archives/oracle-l/ FAQ is at //www.freelists.org/help/fom-serve/cache/1.html -----------------------------------------------------------------
