The latest release of GG supports "classic capture" against the SRL of an ADG
standby.
It use to be that if you wanted capture from a standby, it was Archive Log Only
mode for extract.

11.6 Configuring Classic Capture in Oracle Active Data Guard Only Mode
You can configure classic Extract to access both redo data and metadata in
real-time to successfully replicate source database activities using Oracle
Active Data Guard. This is known as Active Data Guard (ADG) mode. ADG mode
enables Extract to use production logs that are shipped to a standby database
as the data source. The online logs are not used as all. Oracle GoldenGate
connects to the standby database to get metadata and other required data as
needed.

Subject: Re: Golden Gate Replication from a Physical Standby
Andrew,
You can do the migration for AIX to Linux x86-64 using GoldenGate without any
issues. Just make sure you get the correct binaries from edelievery (set for
AIX and set for linux). If you are migrating from 11.2.0.3 to 11.2.0.3, you
have to use classic capture and apply processes. The instantiation process
would use data pump on both sides. Also good to run the profiler to make sure
you have not unsupported data types (DOC ID: 1298562.1)
You should be able to run it from a physical stand-by; however, I have always
ran mine from source to target for migrations and then reconfigured the DG
standby after the migration was done.

In the medium to long term we are going to need to convert a large instance
on AIX to Linux x86_64. My research indicates that we can use golden gate to
accomplish this with minimum down time, and run the replication from the
physical standby.
Has any one been through this process? Or can they point me to some
documentation for the process? I think I have the basic steps in mind, but
this will be my first implementation with Golden Gate, so right now I dont
even know what I dont know about this process.
