The first box we had from EMC we used OS level stripping and mirroring with.

With the last box EMC would only set the box up as RAID-S, the EMC version
of RAID-5, and we mirror RAID-S. Considering RAID-S has 25% overhead to the
normal 20% overhead of RAID-5 and the fact mirroring is 100% disk storage
overhead it actually seems to perform reasonably well at the cost of only a
few disk (more money than I have).

Later this year we will be getting a new disk farm. It might be EMC and we
will have to see what the vendor support/sales team makes available to us.

I'd be really surprised if you couldn't order it (or configure it) as Raid 1
instead. I don't have a DMX here, but typically configure everything as 0+1
(mirrored & striped) for our ERP applications.

Others I've spoken to have fallen in love with the DMX, which supports
snapshots; instead of an equal amount of disk to support BCV's, you now only
need 10-15% to take an instantaneous "snapshot" of your data.
