Database Security Tools

Database security seems to be somewhat of a 'black
art'. There seem to be few third party tools for
actually creating a secure environment and even fewer
algorithms for creating a secure connection to the
database.
How do people handle a jdbc thin client connection to
assure that it is truly secure?
