We do have multiple DNS servers at our primary data center and an
additional one at a remote data center so I think we are covered there in
terms of DNS redundancy.
I think a combination of entries in the /etc/hosts (all
application/database servers that make up that particular environment) and
DNS caching will take care of our issue. I think the caching may already
be set but perhaps the expire time is set too short. I'll work with our
Linux Admin to confirm this and get this straighten out.

That can be configured in /etc/nsswitch.conf, on any Unix-like operating
system.
