Best performing data type for GUID

We need to store GUIDs and they will be the primary access point into
very large tables. What is the recommended data type? I see
varchar2(36) and RAW. Is one better than the other? Is there another
option? Is there significant performance difference between the options
as this app must scale and we have to squeak out all possible
performance.
