Advice on setting sga_max_size for ASM

Hi
I am getting "ORA-04031: unable to allocate 3896 bytes of shared"
errors in the asm instance of a cluster node.
Currently the SGA_MAX_SIZE is set to default value (400 MB) and there
are about a dozen databases on the server.
I am looking for some advice on the parameter. Support indicated 1GB
is a good start.
The grid/asm version is 11.2.0.3.
