It has been my experience recently that the roles of the DBA and the
System administrator are becoming less distinct when working with
Oracle. ASM is one area in which this has been true for me as has RAC
setup and administration. I have been forced, if you will, to gain a
better understanding of system administration in the world of linux and
have also had to teach the system administrators more about Oracle. I
see Oracle heading in the direction of attempting to have the product
assume many of the facets of managing the system and expect that in the
not too distant future Oracle will become on operating system of its
own. I suspect this is in part why Oracle is now supporting Linux. It
certainly does make the job more difficult but I think the move in this
direction is going to continue.

I think we've seen an excellent example of added technical complexity
from Finn Jorgensen.
Also, I completely agree with the fact that ASM shifts responsibility.
Personally, I don't want the storage admin's job.
We have very capable admins, and I don't see any point in taking on the
storage
responsibility in addition to DBA duties.
Which as far as I'm concerned, adds a great deal of complexity, because
then I
as the DBA would also be the storage admin.
