If you don't use infrastructure, rope and nail to hold those suckers in place, those clouds will float right past you. And when they get loose, it's a right ornery hassle to get them back into the box and onto the spinning disk.

12c Grid Infrastructure including ASM hosting 11gR2 Database and 12c Cloud Control using 11g Database are perfectly happy combinations.

For the former, make sure the ASM is set for appropriate compatibility. As other have said 11gR2 and 12c Grid IS more complicated than the earlier grid infrastructure stuff. But in my experience it has roughly the same issues with 11gR2 DB and 12c DB.

For the latter - no real choice (unless they've certified em12c w/ db12c Server in the past week or so)
