Michael, Your words are WONDERFUL! Thank you for sharing. I will, with your permission, print it out for our residents (and faculty). I give extra credit to our residents who I catch telling patients about the vegetable dye IF they give me the name of the vegetable from which it is made. Marshall Marshall E. The carbon in plants come from the carbon found in carbon dioxide (CO2). As plants undergo photosynthesis they draw in water through their roots and carbon dioxide from the air through specialized structures called stomates. So the inorganic carbon in carbon dioxide becomes organic carbon making up the oils, carbohydrates and proteins found in plants. carbon is the compressed dinosaurs and the vegetation they ate 60 million years ago, compressed over time by the overlying dust from space that continues to bombard earth daily ( that where the dust comes from even when we clean so well) so fluorescein is made from carbon. which, technically, is vegetables, just very old ones no one can eat easily. it is synthetic.... it is organic... it is vegetable but it ain't rutabagas ! synthesize - 5 dictionary results <http://www.google.com/aclk?sa=l&ai=CyPEtpUs3TIj9DJqZlQem4rjVAenpjrIBveym_Q_v7M5EEAEgqbvnFygCUISy2pP7_____wFgyeatjfCk1BCgAcvxxPUDyAEBqgQWT9BrSQyXdiVHcMFBaH5_IrK8ifDxWQ&num=1&sig=AGiWqtzkVzFC47sI89aKOR5l327uHIR_ow&adurl=http://www.docsnutritiondepot.com/vpx-synthesize-1-42lb.html> Synthesize 1.42lb $37.95 - VPX - Buy 2 For $36.43 Each - Flat Rate Shipping -Free Over $125! During a lecture/discussion about fluorescein sodium yesterday, we discussed how fluorescein sodium is a synthetic dye and NOT a vegetable dye. One of them had already read/heard it was a vegetable dye. He asked if there were ever ingredients in the dye that were vegetable based and if that is why this rumor exists. Does anybody know why some people refer to it as a vegetable dye? Thanks!
