**this is a toughie, I get it. Some of our providers [mostly those with some
kind of photography training] insist on DSLR and their choice of lenses. The
problem we have with that we’ve never found a DSLR system that will work with
encrypted storage chips and thus our security department goes bonkers.

We use for our plastics that travel to satellite office Nikon Coolpix B500.
Works great easy to transfer. And in the less than $300 range.

Jim,
Richard is correct. The attached is what we use at Kellogg and they work very
well in the hands of TRAINED technician.
We also use phones. There is an app for Epic so when you take photos with
your phone the images are uploaded into the Media tab. It’s either Canto or
Haiku.

iPhones are a good thought, except our health system has strict policies
against storing pt images on personal phones. I've never been very happy with
tablet images in general and i find them clunky to work with.
Some macro capability for sure and realistically it would be either on-camera
flash or a dedicated macro flash.
The zoom range is important so that they can get decent macro/mag without
shadowing from whatever flash is used.
Good point on standardizing zoom settings for consistency/distortion. Ease
of adjusting this will be a consideration. Hmmmm...no film box slot on a
dSLR to slip a mag/zoom cheat sheet into!!!
Wonder how many young photographers have looked at a film body and wondered
what it was for?
