Hi all -
Just to give another datapoint, we place brand-new (straight out of school,w/
coop clinical experience) ophthalmic photographers from about $45,000 -$60,000
average. That low end is brought down for those grads who take lower paying
technician positions in order to be in a particular location, i.e. close to
home.
I advise students that salary is only one piece; benefits are a huge
consideration, especially if they’re thinking of grad school (tuition
benefit/reimbursement, etc). When you factor that in, a $45,000 job can be
worth more like $60,000.
All that said, the job posting gave a range of $60-80,000. For our part, that
seems pretty consistent with what data we have of major metropolitan areas.
BTW (shameless ask ahead) if any RIT alumni want to weigh in to give us more
robust data, we would welcome that! The more accurate industry data we have the
better position new photographers have to negotiate from (and hopefully to
elevate the entire field through a ripple effect).

What is the average cost of rent in San Francisco? ( Google )
The median rent for a one-bedroom apartment stands at $3,460 a month. But it's
not just housing expenses that will eat away at your paycheck. In general, the
total cost of living in San Francisco is 62.6% higher than the US average. Sep

$60k a year divided by 12 months equals $5000 per month without taxes, travel
cost and health insurance taken out. You subtract $3460 from $5000 that leaves
you with approximately $1500 left for car payments, daycare, utilities, cell
phone bill, food? I don't think so. This is why many who live in SF and NYC are
homeless because even if they make $60k a year they cant afford to live in a 1
bedroom apartment let alone a 2 bedroom house ( no one said anything about
living in a 5 bedroom house or having 3 cars )
My two cents.

Dear Fellow Optimal imagers
Here in SF, the #1 most expensive rental market in America ( New York Times May
2018) many many people make 60K or less
Some, even with families
There are always tradeoffs
Perhaps it’s enough to have a challenging job in a great city, be it NY or SF,
and NOT have the 5 bedroom 4 car garage?
Own three cars and a boat?
Many of my cohort here live quite nicely, within the confines of their
expectations.
Food is plentiful and FRESH, Local
Weather is great
Outdoor activities are free
The intellectual climate is outstanding
The diversity and openmindness liberating
Many many things are free- events, libraries, street fairs
We ride our bikes all year long
I would not turn my nose up at an opportunity like this that “only” paid 60k a
year…
My two cents
