The value of the dollar was much higher back then too. Cost of living is way
higher now too. Many different factors to consider. Its multilayered. $80k is
good and doable but $60k is really stretching it in NYC and California
specifically.

I made $12,500 to start in 1980 in Scranton, PA with a biomedical
photography degree from RIT. Looks like that would be about $41,175 in
today's dollars.

Your points are well taken
Cities like Portland, Seattle, LA have as many homeless as SF- weather is a
huge factor
Most SF homeless are mentally ill, substance abuse secondary to lack of
mental care facilities ( thank you Ronald Reagan in the 70s! for removing
them all) and those that make choices to live in the expensive cities
without job skills to back it up. This issue transends Optimal's capacity
for dialogue
One has only to drive across the USA to see the thousands of small towns
that would welcome a moderately skilled labor job force, however, people are
choosing not to live there.
I can't afford to live in Kaui either, so I don't...
I still maintain that it is unreasonable for a beginning imager to expect
60-80K as their first job. Believe me, there are 50 COA's waiting in the
wing to take that job at 45-50K.
