Its been my experience here in the States, California specifically, the ED docs
are generally using a hand held general Ultrasound with an 8 MHz probe which is
pretty useless for ophthalmology. You can get a general picture.
Also those Tegaderm patches would cost me 95.00 here in SF. Far more than the
procedure reimburses!

The ER department tapes Tegaderm over the patients lid and uses regular
ultrasonic gel.
My guess is many of the ERs teach this technique at their joint meetings. Our
ER dept offers a fellowship in specifically Pediatric Emergency Medicine
Ultrasound and they all do this. Our radiology dept is none too impressed with
the ER POCUS (Point of Care US) performing us that is within their scope of
service.
IMO, the ER POCUS ultrasounds are redundant and delays the patient getting
what they really need...an ophthalmic assessment by a pediatric ophthalmologist
with an indirect etc.

I’ve heard of some emergency departments using tegaderm on a closed lid so that
they can use aquasonic ultrasound gel. Does anyone here do this? Why/ why not?

Ah, the mystery is solved. Genteal TEARS gel is not the same as GenTeal
Lubricant Eye Gel. For Ultrasound, the Tears Gel, while better than just
water or tears, is not the viscosity we have come to love and use.

Hi All I work for Natus - Sr.Int'l Clinical Specialist-RetCam/Vision.
Funny to see that you state Genteal Gel is on B/O as my wife ordered me 2
cases from her practice and I received them within
10 days of ordering...

Hi Optimal,
My pharmacy is unable to order ANY gel for ultrasounds. Does anyone have any
suggestions as to where I might be able to order more? Otherwise, I think I may
have to go local pharmacies and buy any stock they might have.
Genteal Gel = “back order” (per our pharmacy)
Refresh liquigel = in stock but not viscous enough (personal preference)
Goniovisc = discontinued (per our pharmacy)
I’m reaching out to you because when I ask my pharmacy department has no
contingency. Your thoughts?
