Hi to all those in the US thinking of us here,
I contacted Optometry Australia (our main professional organisation here in
Aus) and they say that no optometry practices have been lost that they are
aware of. OA’s members represent over 80% of Australian optoms (very good
considering the widespread proliferation of SpecSavers and another chain called
OPSM).
However, a number of the optoms in the affected areas also normally provide
part-time services to nearby small country towns, and these services might be
quite severely disrupted as it is the smaller towns that are being hardest hit.
As part of their services, a number of optoms are providing free replacement
spectacles.
Eye drops have been in heavy demand, as even city centres like Sydney and
Canberra have had days filled with smoke that makes Beijing look tame. One
cringes thinking about those so close to the fire fronts must be enduring. A
press release went out from UNSW Sydney about use of eye washes and tear
supplements.
Hooroo,
Barbara

Does anyone know how our friends and colleagues in Australia are doing given
the current fires?
