This is wonderful. May be FS will see that there are a fair number of us Optecon users out here and begin supporting us. Great job for your efforts. Many of you may remember that I had volunteered to take on the job of scanning them in order to make them available for purposes of teaching and learning the Optacon. My first step in that process was to track down copyright permissions. It turns out, as several of you suggested, that Freedom Scientific is indeed the copyright holder for Optacon documentation. So I contacted Freedom Scientific's General Counsel to explain my plan, to argue for the necessity of making these out-of-print training manuals available, and to seek permissions to scan and distribute them for free. I heard back from him earlier this week, and they actually have proposed something even better than what I had suggested! They did not grant permissions, but instead, they have decided to make the training manuals (Stage I, Stage II, and Independent Practice for Stage I), the Teaching Guidelines, and the Owner's Manuals available for free download from their web site. I will be assisting them in scanning some of these over the next few weeks, and they are aware of the necessity for page images in the training manuals so as to preserve font information and exact page layout. I think this is really exciting, since it will make all of these materials easy to find for everyone, on a well-known, centralized location. We don't have a timetable yet as to when all of this will be completed, but I'll keep the list informed. I'm very impressed that Freedom Scientific has taken an interest in doing this, especially since they don't otherwise market or support the Optacon at all. I guess all that needed to happen was for someone to raise an interest and ask them--so thanks to those of you on the list who nudged me into doing that. I'll let everyone know when they are available online.
