Richard Oehm and I have been discussing power adapters for the
Optacons, and I agreed to summarize our thoughts here.
Caution: the Optacon II or R2 has a different power system that only
charges batteries externally, using a custom AC or lines power
adapter with a non-standard plug. , Oehm Electronics can modify the
R2 chargers to give a vibrating indication for when they are charging properly.
The following comments will be regarding only the original Optacon,
the R1 or Optacon I.
If using an Optacon R1 without its internal battery connected, you
should not power it with the original TSI supplied charger, as it
could damage the Optacon's circuits. Instead, you should use a
regulated 5 volt adapter. Richard Oehm has a friend at Minuteman
Electronics, Doug Heim, who has a supply of the proper replacement
power adapter units with the correct Optacon R1 plugs on the cable
end. This week, we've talked to Doug and given him the specifications
for the Optacon power adapter. Here is what you need to know to
order an Optacon adapter from Minuteman.

Some folks on this list have asked where they can get a cable adapter
to let them use the more compact and common USB power adapters.
We have found a source for a cable adapter with a USB plug on one end
and an Optacon coax barrel plug on the other end. These are
inexpensive but have to be shipped from China, with currently long
shipping delays and a minimum order quantity requirement.
For a near-term solution, we've found and I've ordered a USB cable
adapter kit that includes the proper adapter cable for the
Optacon. I'll test it out as soon as it arrives, and I'll let the
listers know about it, if it works.
Please keep in mind that using either the Minuteman adapter or a USB
adapter on an Optacon R1 that has a battery inside may work to run
the Optacon off AC lines power, but it will not have a high enough
voltage to charge the battery.
