Listers,
In response to a lister's request for copies of the original Optacon
training materials, Here is what we found.
Note: My sighted wife examined the five available PDF files that folks
have falsely assumed to be useful copies of the original Optacon
training materials, however, she found that they are actually useless
low quality image scans of the original Optacon printed training materials.
Before they can be used for training Optacon students, these digital
files would need to be OCR converted into text, then to have their
scanning and formatting errors corrected, and then would need to be
ported back into a clean PDF format. Where relevant, the font style,
font size, and boldface conversions will also need to be made.
Finally, the cleaned up PDF files would need to be printed out on paper,
to make proper Optacon-scannable training materials.
List of the files:
(1) OPTACON Independent Practice Manual.pdf - 5.7 Mega bytes
(2) OPTACON Scanner Pacing Lessons .pdf - 0.9 M bytes
(3) OPTACON Teaching Guidelines.pdf - 4.1 M byte
(4) OPTACON Training Stage 1 - Grapheme Recognition.pdf - 1.2 M bytes
(5) OPTACON Training Stage 2 - Text for Speed Building.pdf - 15.5 M bytes
We've searched the web for files with better copies of the training
materials, but have not found anything yet.
Right now, it seems like the best solution would be to ask again for
someone on the Optacon list to lend their training manuals. Perhaps
someone might be able to have a copy shop make good quality print copies
of all the print training materials.
Cordially,
Noel
