Yeah, the selectrics did have the ball, and I have the Pica ball and the
Orator ball, which is larger font.

Like you said, the later machines had the daisy wheel.  Our office has one
of those, and I like how the balls and later daisy wheels are
interchangeable.

Yes, the typewriter attachments were different because the machines were
manifestly different.  The Selectric was in its day a "special breed of cat"
compared to the traditional typewriter.  As you may well know, all of the
traditional typewriters had a separate typebar for each typing key on the
machine.  Each typebar had two characters on it - one for the shifted side
and one for the unshifted side.  With this setup, there was a relatively
large space in the middle for that "key-bed" from which a bar would come up
and strike the ribbon and paper.  By contrast, the selectric had a ball in
front of the ribbon and paper.  The desired letter was selected by rotating
and tilting that ball to place the needed character in the correct position
so that it struck when that assembly moved forward to impact the paper.  It
was indeed a very rapid "dance" as that ball rotated aand tilted to line up
the needed character then jump forward to hit the paper.  You should have
seen one of those units in action when it was driven by a MagCard console.
I know; I ran one of those things for several years.  One advantage of that
Selectric system was that you could change the character set "in a flash" by
changing the ball.  There was later an IBM 6240 which had a wheel with a
spoke for each single character available.  Again, you could change the
character set by changing the wheel.  These machines, though, posed a
different challenge for an Optacon setup.  Thankfully, though, the 6240 and
the MagCard II had cards which operationally gave them memory, allowing for
easy editing so that we didn't have to try to correct a copy with whiteouts
and erasers.

There was an attachment made for the Royal, I think, and one for the
Selectric.  They were different.

Thank you.  The Selectric is an IBM, so I am confused, but I do appreciate
your offer.  It sounds like the attachment may not be generic but that they
were made for specific typewriters, is this true?

Thanks again!

I have several lens attachments here (someone snatched one not because he
needs it but because he is a horder of Anything) for the "selectric?" I
think but not for any of the IBM.  They look rather clunky.  If this would
work for you, Judy, let me know and I can send you one.  Let me know what
you need looks like.

I wish I had an IBM Selectric.  I used to have the attachment for the
optacon.

I still use my electronic typewriter and Optacon for doing cheques.

When I had a dot matrix printer I could also use that and do cheques on the
computer, but my current HP Deskjet printer won't take a cheque as it
regards them as too small.
