It's interesting to note that according to this review of color spaces,

NTSC 1953 has about the same gamut as Adobe RGB 1998, while SMPTE and PAL have only about 75% the gamut of NTSC. This is shown in the top chromaticity chart on page 13 and in text on page 20.

When you watch a film in a theater, it's shown in near darkness. But on TV displays, color quality has been sacrificed for brighter pictures.
