CHICAGO (MarketWatch) - Comcast Corp. on Wednesday unveiled enhancements to its iPad application at the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The largest U.S. cable operator said users of the Apple Inc. tablet device will soon be able to stream almost everything Comcast systems are showing live on television, along with 3,000 hours of on-demand content, wherever there is a wireless Internet connection.

The company had announced in November that it was rolling out its Xfinity iPad app, which let Comcast subscribers program their digital video recorders, browse content by keyword or title, create a watch list of favorite shows, and share viewing choices with others via social networks.

Comcast and other cable operators are trying to add as much value as possible to their services in the face of slowing subscription growth and stiffer competition from phone companies that offer video, including AT&T and Verizon.

There is also concern that some consumers will combine video services such as Hulu with Netflix's rental offerings to downgrade their cable service or cancel it altogether.
