Pure unadulterated crap indeed.

For most of our lives we have had to force content to live within the
constraints of the distribution media.

Cliff: Because THAT assured the creators their works would be seen AS THEY INTENDED.

Craig: Theaters survived by offering a viewing experience better than a soft, artifact ridden, 4:3 picture on a small screen.

Cliff: AGAIN because that is how motion pictures were designed to be seen, in a darkened movie palace, with comfortable seats without other distractions or interruptions. TRY THAT AT HOME.

Craig: We finally have a distribution system free of constraints that can optimize the presentation for the display device and the distribution pipe, and you want to create a new "straight jacket" for content producers.

Cliff: The current distribution system delivers less resolution and far worse color than a motion picture FILM ever did. New digital projection systems don't begin to let you see how good a motion picture film with a carbon arc projector looks on a silver screen. Cable and fiber deliver less resolution than over the air 8VSB HD does. AND AGAIN, Nothing produced digitally accurately fits the aspect ratio of any screen made for home use.

Craig: This would be a HUGE step backwards!

Cliff: This would be a huge step toward how film entertainment should look in a theater. In the home you will have to spend lots of money to replicate that look.

I went to see the Wizard of OZ [not the 3D version] at a well known national theater chain. It was a digital projection program that was absolutely the worst movie presentation I have ever seen in a commercial theater.

The projector was not a huge powerfull Cristie, but an industrial projector the size of a Kodak Carousel unit that was fitted with a short lens and projected onto too large a screen creating a dim, limited resolution picture. I emailed to several addresses of the theater chain, and never heard one word back.
Quality does not matter anymore. It's only and always about the money.

AS for picture quality at home, the CRT is still the best picture maker. Not even the OLED screens
can produce proper details in black like a CRT is capable of.

The best HD images I have ever seen were on a Panasonic 35 inch CRT display at NAB one year.
Expensive way to watch TV but if you want quality, that is what you need.

How about creating a standard. One standard. One standard to which ALL must
adhere.

It used to be this way before TV was digitally "improved".

Now, no picture fits all screens and all pictures have different resolutions
over
different delivery systems and on different sets.

Editorial Comment: Pure Unadulterated Crap.

On the second page:

"Several new players are trying to streamline and unify interfaces for multiple
platforms and to provide integration with ecosystems made up of products from multiple
vendors."

Good thinking!! Or said another way, introduce some discipline in this chaotic
state of affairs.
