John, The problem with television - and with the film industry - is the relative lack of creative talent. There are tons of bright engineers and technicians, plenty of production experts and special effects geniuses, and a surplus of competent actors. The missing ingredient is good writers. The networks jumped on the reality TV fad because it doesn't require writers, other than to fill in the dead spots. The shows' editors become the defacto writers by piecing scenes together in a way that suggests some semblance of a dramatic arc. Well-written shows like "Bernie Mac" or "Desperate Housewives" to the contrary, there are few people who know how to tell a story effectively, whether it's an epic or a throwaway news bite. The de-emphasis of the arts in public education will only make this problem worse in the future. We'll all have better-than-real images and stunning sound, but will never return to the high level of storytelling that made possible shows like "Playhouse 90," "Route 66," or the original "Twilight Zone."
