I went to the FCC site http://www.fcc.gov/mb/video/tvq.html and punched in WECT. Apparently, what's happened is that WECT went from Channel 6 analog, 100 KW ERP, on a huge 588 meter tower, to UHF Ch 44, 575 KW ERP, on a much lower 280 meter tower. However, it also looks like there is a construction permit for the Ch 44 digital to go to 710 KW ERP, on an even taller 590 meter tower. So I did some numbers using the Hata model. I allowed 20 dB margin for reception. A viewer with a 10 meter receive antenna, with tuner sensitivity as shown below, should be able to receive a signal 160 Km from the transmitter: VHF Ch 6 100 KW 588 m tower -> -69 dBm UHF Ch 44 575 KW 280 m tower -> -84 dBm UHF Ch 44 710 KW 590 m tower -> -74 dBm If that FCC site is still current, perhaps people as far as Raleigh will again be able to receive WECT, after the new facility is built? It looks like 100 mile range is right at the cliff, for the best receivers.
