AUGUST 15, 2013 > PETER KAFKA ------------------------------------- This article makes good sense. The reason this *is* a big deal is that if the congloms are willing to deal with OTT sites, then the different OTT sites would compete somehow or other (obviously always in ways that the congloms would agree to), and consumers everywhere will have a choice. Someone in Seattle can choose from an ever growing number of OTT sites, same ones available to someone in Orlando. Another reason, it (theoretically) makes the consumer gear open once again, as it was before MVPDs. The OTT sites can create any number of different portals, using whatever search engines they prefer, providing any kind of EPG experience will attract the most viewership, and since this is over the Internet, any computer should have access to it. Unlike the MVPD model, that locks consumers into only one medium, in practice (not too many people subscribe to cable plus DBS), one choice of TV channels, proprietary STB, one EPG, and so on. This proves the point that there is no reason for the content OWNER to insist on using just the traditional MVPD model. Now, let's see whether the CE companies will blow this one. You know, like Sony "connected TVs" only having access to the Sony OTT site, for example. Or PCs that have "Intel inside" only having access to Intel OTT sites. Even a good thing can be royally hosed.
