Ever hear of Intranets?
Way ahead of you, Craig. I already mentioned traffic shaping used for VPNs, at
the beginning of this. Did you forget? Winding back to square one again? This
has nothing to do with your ISP service, though, which cannot collude with
Internet sources, to play favorites, over public broadband service.
The whole issue of fast lanes is overblown.
It's not overblown, if ISPs, in collusion with certain Internet companies,
crowd out others. But it's true that in a sense, edge servers could be
considered a type of "fast lane." It's best to stick with the basics. As long
as all Internet companies, operating with the public, are given the same "best
effort" ISP service, there should be no issue at all. Think of it this way. As
long as any number of companies can locate "edge servers," and packets from
these edge servers can reach users with the same best effort service, then all
is good. What's bad is if one of the companies colludes with the ISP, to gain
an advantage in routing its packets.
As the next generation of broadband technologies reaches market,
it is far from clear why consumers should NOT be allowed to pay
for fast lanes that prioritize services they subscribe to.
Way ahead of you again, Craig, since I have mentioned this time and again. Let
me remind you what I said, with respect to "paid prioritization." Quoting
myself: "It depends who is doing the paying." Remember now? Just like the zero
rating issue. All of this is okay, **as long as the user is paying**, as
opposed to a special interest paying. The problem is always the same. The
problem is collusion.
There are two ways to deploy and use edge servers.
You're being unnecessarily verbose. What matters is that the edge servers have
to be located, topologically (not necessarily geographically), downstream of
potential disruptive congestion. So when you say,
The closer the geographic servers are to the ISP the less likely
there will be routing congestion.
This may or may not be true. For example, when Sling TV, or other streaming
services, have gotten bad publicity, by choking, in some neighborhoods, during
popular sporting events, it is most likely because their server distribution is
not quite what it needs to be. It's that simple. Much depends on population
density and on local interests.
Cox is not going to zero rate a service's bits unless they receive
compensation for those bits. If DirecTV Now agrees to pay for
those bits, no problem.
Craig still doesn't get it! Astounding. For some unknown reason, he cannot
comprehend what net neutrality means. Let me repeat once again: "It depends who
is doing the paying." It is absolutely NOT okay for Cox to collude with DirecTV
Now, unless Cox offers the same deals for customers of other streaming
services. Do you know what the word "collusion" means, Craig? This ain't cable
TV. We are talking about the Internet, a telecom service.
