The key concepts are entirely obvious and easy to grasp. As you say, this is a learning experience for broadcasters who have spent the past two decades trying to defend their turf against overwhelming odds, as the multi-channel services have grown to their current level of dominance. The real problem is that a proper PSIP implementation across a broadcast market is not in the interest of broadcasters trying to protect their current business model. The ability to find content of interest via a program guide service flies in the face of a business model driven by self promotion and scheduling that attempts to leverage the "power" of program adjacency. If broadcasters work together to create a competitive program guide technology they are in fact helping their viewers find better programming alternatives available from their competitors. If they try to turn PSIP into a channel oriented guide they defeat the purpose and look stupid compared to the offerings of their multi-channel competitors. Problem is that their competitors are selling choice, while broadcasters are trying to keep viewers from choosing alternatives.
