If the most watched shows get their ranking mostly because of OTA viewership, and just a few added leftovers from cable, imagine how huge FOTA viewership must be.

Why imagine Bert?

Look at the numbers.

Nielsen says there are now about 114 million TV homes. The FCC estimates that nearly 90% of these homes subscribe to an MVPD, but lets stay with 85%.

114,000,000 x .15 = 17.1 million FOTA homes.

The broadcast networks now get about 30% of the prime time audience (all homes).

114,000,000 x .30 = 34.2 million homes.

So at least half of the network audience comes from MVPD homes, probably a good bit more since not all of the FOTA homes are watching TV or the broadcast networks.

But yes, a significant portion of broadcast network viewership comes from the FOTA homes.

Look at the article, Craig, and look at the graphics that came with it. These network shows are FAR more popular than all but a half-handful of MVPD-only programs.

SO?

That's the respective business models Bert. Avatar is making more money than most of the "turkeys" at the theater this week too. Spend a bunch of money on a program and you "may" attract a big audience.

Now ask yourself why the majority of TVs are NOT tuned to a broadcast network during prime time...

I agree that profitability is down compared to years ago. That always happens when more entrants come into a mature market. It's true across the board in the economy. So what? That's what makes capitalism work.

What is really down Bert, is the overall quality of the content delivered by broadcasters...

More people are watching a wider range of content that costs a fraction to produce...

Go Figure!

Craig
