I was not aware that Charles Poynton came up with the 1920 x 1080 numbers, as there was a wealth of work going on related to this at the time I got involved with the ACATS/ATSC process in 1992. Charles and I were (and still are) strong proponents of orthogonal sampling grids (i.e. square pixels). and the 1920 x 1080 numbers were a natural fallout, when you looked at options for 2 Mpixel formats (except for the slight misalignment with the 16 x 16 macroblock structure of MPEG-2 (i.e. 1088 lines). I was aware that Kerns Powers was the first to propose the 1280 x 720 raster. You seem not to have storing objections to the notion that we can now produce video at any raster size, aspect ratio and frame rate. While I have long been a proponent of this approach, I DO acknowledge that there will be a limited number of acquisition format for economy of scale realities. It is when we optimize content during production and preparation for emission that we can take full advantage of the "format agnostic" nature of digital video compression.
