By the way, in case anyone runs into the same problem I initially thought I had 
yesterday, there are little converter boxes that can be used to take an optical 
digital audio in, and provide standard stereo left/right analog out.

The first link is for a 2 channel optical digital to stereo analog out. The 
second link is for an optical Dolby Digital 5.1 to analog stereo out. And 
actually both boxes also accept the coax S/PDIF format as input.
