I think I remember there are power restrictions for low VHF DTVs because = of co-channel interference problems exaserbated by the fact that RF travels further (skip) at these = frequencies than at the higher VHFs. =20 Another interesting article that includes reasons why low VHF channels = are not suited for DTV is by proponants of reallocating CH 6 solely for = FM broadcast! http://www.recnet.com/channel6/ ________________________________ From: opendtv-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx on behalf of Doug McDonald Sent: Fri 10/7/2005 12:08 PM To: opendtv@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [opendtv] Re: Tentative Channel Elections Benham, Cliff wrote: >Regarding VHF Channel 2 being unsuitable for DTV, this band of =3D >frequencies [54-60 mHz] seems to >be approximately where lightning and tornadic electric fields are very = =3D >intense. > But are these stations using a realistic "full" power? 57 MHz actually in the "shortwave" region. It's subject to skip, for instance. It's also low enough frequency that high transmitter powers are possible. For example, 50 kW average. With a four bay antenna that's 200 kW average (digital ) ERP. That kind of power may very well punch through the goo like 2 kW won't.
