Although it's not mentioned, I would suspect that all receivers must be capable of receiving HD programming, even if they can only display an SD image. Otherwise, it seems unlikely that they could afford to transmit 50 and 80 percent HD programs on the two channels. The state broadcaster will offer HD programming on both TV ONE and TV2 channels by July 2008, in time for the Olympics. TVNZ CEO Rick Ellis said the decision to invest in an HD infrastructure would put TVNZ in an industry leadership position in a rapidly changing digital world. "This is a tremendously exciting step. To be able to provide the Beijing Olympics in HD is a first for New Zealand and will be a spectacular experience for viewers," he said. Half of TV ONE's peak programming will be in HD, while 80% of TV2's will be in HD. "We expect the amount of local content in HD to grow progressively over the next few years as TVNZ and the local production industry gear up for it," said TVNZ. HD programming will not be available on Freeview's satellite platform since it was launched using MPEG2 technology.
