So, a TV minus ATSC tuner, but plus built-in Google Cast. Interesting!
Although they obviously miss that a lot more than 10% of US TV households use
*some* OTA TV. Still, the emphasis went to built-in streaming.
As it should. That's the trend line - something Bert and I agree on. My only
question is why Google Cast? If you're leaving out ATSC, cable and DBS, why
pick a winner for streaming? Bert is probably correct that there was one of
those "collusion" deals....
Another interesting item. According to Pete Putman, omitting ATSC would save
"roughly $10 per set." Vizio claims the omission is for ease of setup. They
also say they have a separate tuner. I guess using a separate tuner
simplifies setup, according to them.
The cost of the tuner is probably right. Most of the patents have expired, so I
wonder if manufacturers are still paying the ATSC patent pool royalties...
No mention of any impending doom of ATSC 1.0 as an excuse to omit a tuner.
Why would this be an issue? The product is a 4K monitor, primarily targeted at
the home theater market. Not sure what the 24" version is targeted at; maybe
PCs...
Assuming anyone would need an excuse. Sounds like collusion, but at least
they did make streaming from any device to the TV set straightforward. I
trust Google compensated them accordingly.
Unless you want to access other ecosystems, in which case you may still need to
use a PlayStation, Amazon Fire or Apple TV.
But it is an interesting "trend."

Craig
