One thing, though. The broadcast channels are available FOTA. But does Dish
transmit local into local to free, to its subscribers? Or does that cost a
monthly amount, even if just the basic tier?
Both Dish and DirecTV offer local stations as an add on to other bundles. The
cost used to be about $5/mo, but may be higher now because of retrans fees.
Cable companies are also charging a "broadcast fee" as a separate line item on
their bills, rather than raising the cost of the basic and extended basic tiers.
Dish subscribers should look into Internet streaming of all those shows they
are missing, not just the OTA antenna.
Not much help, as in some of these disputes the TV Everywhere feeds are blocked
as well. But it may be possible to see the shows on a delayed basis via
catch-up services.
Who knows. They might never look back. Or at the very least, they might never
pay for the basic tier channels (assuming the pay extra for that).
Gave up on the FOTA networks a long time ago except for live sports. Problem is
the way Tribune and others try to force carriage (and fees) for both local
stations and cable networks when these renewals happen. This is the real reason
for bloated bundles, as many rerun channels get added to the bundles.
