Honestly, he has a point. Much of the hype was badly misplaced - the constant
insistence on the it-serves-no-purpose-in-broadcast IP transport, for
instance. And the déjà vu all over again, where getting an ATSC 3.0 receiver
is like pulling hens' teeth, for absolutely no reason (unless we postulate
under the table payoffs). Just like last time around, were it not for the
Michael Powell FCC, who did what anyone expecting results would have to do.
What were the results Bert?
1. Millions of people had to pay for a receiver they never used.
2. The broadcast audience declined dramatically as people moved to MVPD and OTT
services.
Today, “some” of these ATSC 1.0 receivers are being connected to antennas, as
is the case in our home. But the percentage of time that we watch OTA
programming is near zero. Much the same is true for the rest of the “cord
cutters” and “cord switchers.”
This time, no Michael Powell. On the contrary, we get extremist, libertarian,
self-destructive and counter-productive rhetoric. But it probably doesn't
make much difference, I say again. One-way broadcast delivery is way too
limited, in a day when technology has gone far beyond that technique. As this
article reports, even old-timers are waking up to the fact that there are far
more enjoyable ways of watching TV.
Duh. This coming from a guy who has spent years telling us how glorious it was
to access nearly 50 broadcast programs for “free,” until he finally broke down
and got REAL broadband.
It is interesting to note that NBC, for one, is starting to mention "stream
anytime" before bothering with other options, such as an appointment schedule
and channel. Clearly, the center of mass is shifting. It has been doing so
for many years. Even while the traditionalists kept insisting that those
streaming consisted of a vanishingly small minority.
No Bert. This is just the reflection of the new reality:
Episodic television is NOT time dependent; that was an artificial constraint
imposed by NBC and the rest of the broadcast congloms. In this modern age,
there is no longer a reason to force people to schedule the viewing of a
program that can be streamed ANYTIME.
Thank you Netflix for destroying the old business model. Thank you congloms for
your greed, in selling all your old shows to Netflix, which allowed them to
build the service and start competing with the congloms for new shows.
But this shift does not mean the end of live TV. It is still the backbone of
both broadcasters and (V)MVPD services. It’s called sports and news.
