ABC increasing its OTT presence. In markets with ABC-owned stations,
programming is available live OTT, or on demand with presumably no delay, at
this set of sites. Participating affiliated station markets give you on
demand the next day. Otherwise, ABC imposes a one-week delay for online
viewing of full length episodes, at abc.go.com.
It's not quite the CBS All Access model, but ABC is also finding an Internet
role for the local broadcasters, outside of just TVE.
It is NOTHING like the CBS All Access model Bert.
All of the services listed in this announcement are either existing legacy
MVPDs or OTT VMVPDs. And ALL of these services include TVE access to most of
the networks in their bundles; in order to access the VOD services a subscriber
will use the ABC TVE apps on their connected TV and mobile devices.
As you correctly note, If you want FREE access to ABC shows you will need to
wait a week.
What is more important here is that ABC and its affiliates now have a single
clearinghouse for any new VMVPD service to negotiate carriage of local ABC
affiliates. I would expect the other broadcast networks to announce similar
initiatives over the next few weeks as they prepare for Hulu live and begin to
make local affiliates available via any VMVPD service.
Before the end of this year I would expect to see multiple VMVPD bundles that
will allow legacy MVPD subscribers to cut the TV cord and still access ALL of
the networks (including their local stations) that they were watching via these
legacy services. This in turn will cause the legacy systems to drop their
prices for the TV portion of their bundles.
