Plus Technicolor adds expansion of regular SDR material to HDR, in displays using the new software package (most likely) on one of those SoCs, announced at CES. So, you get three products at once. LG LCD TVs had Technicolor support and legacy expansion support announced, the OLEDS had mention of DolbyVision support. LG is now also back with the BBC, hlg was abandonned for HDR10 at IFA/IBC.

Word from the Technicolor CES analyst briefing was that it works and works well.

So not HDR regraded to SDR with the conversion algorithme values saved as meta data for re-rendering of the HDR, as promoted by Philips and Jeroen, but off-the-shelf/-air content, as a the third product.

Jeroen Stessen schreef op 10-06-2016 10:50:

Hi,

I think that Bert has the clearer understanding of what we
(Technicolor + Philips joint HDR) do:
We tone-map from HDR to SDR, this is a compression operation. Now the
image is suitable for transportation over an SDR channel and viewing
on a legacy SDR display.
A new HDR receiver inverse-tone-maps from SDR to HDR, this is an
expansion operation. Now the image must be viewed on an HDR display,
with more "wow".
So what we have here is an SDR stream, plus metadata for expanding it
back to HDR. The end result is HDR, but in an SDR backward compatible
way.
Maybe the confusing part here is that you actually get two products
for the price of one.  :-)

Best,
-- Jeroen
