Well if these definitions are correct the US was a socialist country from the 
days of Alexander Hamilton till the Civil War, at least, since the "American 
System" then in place was rooted in high tariffs to protect urban workers to 
the detriment of western and southern farmers.
[dB] Many would argue this was the primary reason for secession.

Some believe those tariffs helped build an industrial US.
[dB] Others believe it would have built better and stronger without them.

On the other hand doing what the Chinese are doing to preserve their current 
political system may help them short term but like with the Japanese the 
dollars they are hoarding will turn to ashes as they wait for a return. They 
can expect to lose 70 to 90% of the value of those dollars in the interim IMO.
[dB] IMHO the Chinese are making tremendous progress toward a free and open 
economy (compared to just a few decades ago), while most other countries are 
moving further away from it.
